My Best Gift Ideas for Friends and Familyposted on 15 May 2012 in FashionGift giving is one of the hardest things to do for friends and family. Christmas time used to be a difficult time for me, until I thought of a great idea: Don't buy gifts. I'm not speaking of refusing to give your family or friends anything, I'm saying that it is a better idea to MAKE them a gift instead - be it jewellery from some jewellery making supplies you may have, to even a cake. Making a gift has several advantages. One of those advantages is that the gifts usually cost less. The most expensive thing to do around Christmas time is to buy expensive gifts at the mall. This used to destroy my bank account and leave me depressed during the holidays. Another advantage is avoiding the long holiday lines. Waiting for a parking spot during the holidays is something that nobody should experience. Another advantage is that everybody likes a unique, personalized gift. It shows more thought and effort, even if it takes the same amount of effort. More on this Topic: telegraph.co.uk | lifehacker.com |

From Richmond to Hanover Without a Motorposted on 15 May 2012 in Recreation and HobbiesCycling can be a delight or a chore, depending on your surroundings, weather, road quality, the courtesy (or discourtesy) of drivers. Though I'm not an avid sports cyclist, I've always enjoyed traveling under my own power, and even when I took a holiday in the UK, I couldn't stop browsing all the trek bike shops in London. Despite lacking a motor (it's a bike, not a moped) my reliable little Motobecane Super Mirage has got me around central Virginia for decades. One of the rides I recall best began in the noise and congestion of downtown Richmond, and ended some twenty miles away, at my home in rural Hanover County. City drivers are not known for their consideration, and until I was clear of the central city it was tough going. Once I reached the suburbs the surroundings became greener and more inviting but if anything the drivers of oversized SUVs and mommy vans were even more hostile to non-motorized traffic. At last I broke free of the chain of McMansions and town houses, reaching the fresh air and freedom of the countryside. What a relief to be able to tell it was springtime! Birdsong replaced blaring horns, flowering trees and new leaves appeared in place of billboards and no parking signs, and as if by magic the drivers who shared the road with me seemed to gain sympathy or at least decency. To this day I can recall the cool, delightful breeze that refreshed me as I pedaled away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Arriving at my home in Hanover County, I coasted down the gravel driveway. Looking back toward town it was hard to believe just a couple of hours separated this paradise from the hurtling steel and glass of downtown! More on this Topic: wisegeek.com | investopedia.com |

The Not So Easy Bake Oven!posted on 13 May 2012 in Toys and GamesWhen I was a small girl, we didn't have the incredible gadgetry that kids are spoilt with these days - no RC tanks or computer games. While my friends loved the traditional toys of Barbie and other dolls, my favourite toy as a little girl was my Easy Bake Oven. I wanted one so bad, but my sister told me they were expensive so I tried not to get my hopes too high. Nonetheless, there it was under the tree the year I was five. I was so excited! Every weekend I would take out the oven and make a mess baking the tiny treats. I thought it was so cool you only needed a light-bulb to cook! I am sure my mother was less than amused, as the amount of work that goes into making a little cake in an Easy Bake Oven is almost as much (maybe more) than just using the real oven. I would sit there at the kitchen table all day making up a pastry feast, then I would promptly serve them to my dolls and stuffed animals (oh yes, and me!). These days I still love baking in the real oven, and now instead of my dolls and stuffed animals I bake for friends and family! (oh yes. And still me). |

Radiohead's Hail to the Thief is Timelessposted on 12 May 2012 in Arts and EntertainmentMusical taste and preferences evolve over time. Have you ever looked back at the music you were listening to 10 years ago, or when you were a teen, and thought, "What was I thinking?!" I'm much the same way - artists, albums, and songs I was infatuated with now sound silly and trite. The exception to this is Radiohead, and specifically the album Hail to the Thief. Many people prefer Kid A, but this is the album for me. This album and artist is a constant in my life. I've had some experience in recording studio designs, and the production sounds of this album are so well balanced and nuanced. No matter how much my music aesthetic changes, this album always feels fresh and relevant. The thrumming bass, techno melodies, and haunting vocal work have aged well, and still fit in perfectly in my collection and in pop culture. I truly think Radiohead writes music that stands outside of the era they write it in, so their early 90's stuff is just as compelling as anything they write now. This is definitely one of the best albums ever. |

The Perfect Retirement Home In The Perfect Small Iowa Townposted on 9 May 2012 in Home and GardenLiving in small town Iowa is the perfect life, and having the perfect retirement home makes it that much better. Our home is just a small home (a self build housing project of ours) in the center of the block that is one block from Main Street, three blocks from the high school and the elementary school, one block from the new million dollar library, one block from the post office, and one block from the doctor's office. What location could be better for a retired couple? It is a two-bedroom home with 1150 square feet. There is a laundry room on the first floor so I don't have to go up and down stairs to do my laundry. The house was built in such a way that it makes use of every available space for storage and living. The home has permanent siding which does not need painting or much maintenance and the windows are double pane for efficiency. The windows also fold in for easy cleaning. Kitchen cupboards and all woodwork is a fine birch. This is a perfect home for a perfect retirement. |

Some Tips On How to Run Your Car Economicallyposted on 6 May 2012 in Cars and TransportRunning a car economically is a great concern to the modern day individual. Currently in my dealership we're offering vauxhall corsa deals, and I can tell you that the smaller car is really popular at the moment because of spiralling fuel costs. With the ever-increasing price of fuel there has never been a more important time to learn how to drive in a more environmentally friendly manner, although there are some basic tips which should always be followed. Firstly, if the car has a manual gearbox then care should be taken to shift to a higher gear at the earliest opportunity, preventing the engine from revving too highly. Acceleration should be kept to a minimum, with no harsh braking which wastes energy. If the situation is safe it is also possible to coast in neutral gear for short distances. There are also steps to take inside the vehicle. Running air conditioning or climate control devices uses a great deal of fuel and should be avoided. Also, sun roofs and windows should be kept closed at high speed to minimise drag. In extreme situations the driver should even avoid using the radio! |

My Garden, for Myself and the Birdsposted on 6 May 2012 in Home and GardenIn front of my home there is a beautiful garden. I do like to wake up early to see the beautiful rays of the morning sun kissing those lovely flowers in my garden. My garden is beautifull and lovely, landscaped by fresh green grass, just like a bed. I have a gazebo that I use to get myself some shade if I'm lounging - otherwise, I'm gardening! The lotus and lily pool in the centre adds beauty to my garden. Making and maintaining a garden is a tricky affair. In the morning I water the plants, and in return, they give me fresh oxygen and a lovely view. I will not pluck the flowers from my garden because, the real owners of my garden are the flies and birds. I am only a caretaker. I like to see the butterflies come to my garden and lick the honey from the flowers. They help the plants reproduce. My garden is its own little ecosystem, though moles have become interlopers I've had to take care of by way of mole traps - a necessary evil I'm afraid. More on this Topic: digg.com | mashable.com |

Some Primer Tips To Buying A Houseposted on 2 May 2012 in Home and GardenIf you need to buy a house, first think about what kind of lifestyle you and your family would be comfortable with. Villas, apartments, individual home, an executive floor - these all entail a particular type of lifestyle. And after that, where it should be placed - inner city or out in the country? Another thing to remember is that the property should be near to school if you have kids, as well as being near shopping malls as its easy to go and it saves time. Also consider the infrastructure - this is important. Look at the original plans of the house and see what renovation work has been carried out (if any) during its lifespan. A house surveyor should check everthing over for you - from windows to stair handrails to doors to plug sockets - to make sure everything is in working order, and anything that isn't will be noted. Remember that you may need to buy in materials from plumbing supplies as well as hire handymen to do any renovation work on the property - budget for that. Buying a property is a big step so make sure you leave nothing left to chance. |

Our Home Improvement: Inside and Outsideposted on 2 May 2012 in Home and GardenWe have three major projects planned for our home. Our goals are to make our home more beautiful, give us more functional space, and improve the resale value. The first project on our list is the installation of a privacy fence in the backyard and give us enough space to put up one those creative garden rooms there. We then plan on landscaping the front and back by adding trees, shrubs, and flowers. The last and largest project will be finishing our basement. We want to install a 6ft fence to provide privacy and to keep our Labrador in the yard. We plan to do the installation ourselves, but will be buying fence panels rather than building it from pickets. The landscaping is a priority because we enjoy spending time outdoors when the weather is nice, and a beautiful environment is so much more pleasant. It will also increase the curb appeal of our home. We are finishing the basement to add two more bedrooms and a family room to our home. This will give us more space for ourselves and guests, and will increase the value of our home. |

Steampunk Contraptions and Interesting Objectsposted on 1 May 2012 in Home and GardenSteampunk is really not very easy to define. Steampunk is often associated with all the various contraptions, gadgets and gizmos from the pre-Edwardian era. Steam power and all the various devices invented to propel and power the earlier inventions are now highly fashionable and come under the genre of Steampunk. Steampunk objects often display the essential mechanisms, clearly able to be to be viewed by all. For instance, gear wheels, cogs and pulleys are frequently on display and their movements clearly visible to the observer. This is one of the main attractions and joys of Steampunk. This genre is especially popular with a younger generation of enthusiasts who have never seen the 'inner workings' of their modern electronic and technical everyday gadgets and applicances. Steampunk allows all of us to see the real activity or power propulsion in real time, without the requirement for any plug-ins or battery chargers - not bad, eh? The Dental Visit: It Will All Be Just Fineposted on 30 April 2012 in Health and BeautyIt seems that every few years or so I end up having a cavity, and a visit to my Essex dentist is required. I'm usually a little nervous when I go to have it filled, but not too much. About five years ago though, I awoke in the middle of the night to a terrible pain coming from my tooth. I realized almost immediately that I could feel a hole in the side of my tooth with my tongue. It was as if it came out of nowhere. I don't think it was there yesterday, and I should remember something like that. I went to the dentist and she said I needed to have it drilled and filled immediately. I was terrified! I don't know what came over me but I had half a mind to hop right up out of that chair and run for the door. My dentist assured me that I would be just fine. Then she told me that it would be "uncomfortable." This did not make me feel better at all. I assumed it was her nice way of telling me it would hurt. Boy was I in for a surprise! She kept telling me I would feel a little pinch, but I never did. Less than an hour later my tooth was painlessly repaired! Thank goodness for good dentists. |

Worried That Our Next Home Improvement Project Will Cause a Headacheposted on 29 April 2012 in Home and GardenHaving just installed some Richard Burbidge stair parts to our staircase, the next home improvement project my wife wants us to work on is our outdated, cramped kitchen. Our home was built in 1959 and the kitchen is the last remaining original room in the house. Of course, it's also the one room that we can't live with out, so planning it out properly and having things go smooth is our number one goal. Our kitchen currently has a small breakfast nook and plenty of cabinet space. But what we really want is an updated Kitchen that is useful and that utilizes all the wall space. We would like plenty of cabinet space, but prefer open spaces. We would like to plan the kitchen remodel so as to minimize down time and keep costs down. We have a contractor in mind, and cost points are in line with our finances. Our biggest fear is that with our three children and our busy schedule, we will have a major disruption to our daily lifestyle and we worry that the kids will suffer frustration that will make the whole project not worth doing. |

Hot Summer Days, Enjoying Life in Californiaposted on 23 April 2012 in Holiday and TravelHot summer days are unbearable in California. People imagine us sipping ice cold lemonades or wine coolers by the poolside, watching as movie stars walk by, or relaxing under a gazebo in some park with their iPod playing. I do like to retreat to my rented Dordogne farmhouse in the hotter weeks, but when I'm stuck in the States, it's a lot hotter where I live. Those more active among us might spend the hot summer days surfing, wakeboarding, or riding jet skis, while some enjoy simply lying on the beach soaking up the sun. Hiking is another pleasant activity, especially when there is a stream or lake nearby. The clear days also lend themselves to camping, as the evenings cool down beautifully, and families enjoy spending time in the open air. Hot summer days also remind us of the summer camps we went to as teenagers, where we played hard all day and were continually reminded by our counselors to drink enough water. With clouds seasons from us, the sun makes everything look beautiful, and we pray for a breeze to bring us comfort on the hot summer days. |

Why it’s Cool to Shop Clothes for Tall Womenposted on 21 April 2012 in FashionGrowing up in Dallas Texas means that you are used to doing everything big and seeing everything larger than life. I guess it doesn’t make any difference because its in Dallas that I knew and felt more accustomed to the idea that I was a big girl and there wasn’t any shame in wearing clothes for tall women. The problem was when we moved to California and all I saw where these petite skinny white girls who made fun of me for wearing clothes for tall women. I knew the only way to beat them was to show them up Dallas style so I called up my aunt from Milan and asked her to give me a job as a runway model. As soon as they found out I was spending my summer in the fashion houses of Italy everyone wanted to be my friend. Of course I didn’t let that get to me and I gave them the same cold shoulder that they gave me. Other Sources: yellowpages.com | rottentomatoes.com | www.heightgoddess.com |

How to Ensure That You Get Enough Sleepposted on 16 April 2012 in Health and BeautySleep is very important for development of the body. If it lacks then one is bound to have some problems. If you want to get enough sleep then you have to ensure that the environment that you sleep in is comfortable. Sleeping Tips can be helpful in achieving this. There should be peace and quietness. A noisy place is not very comfortable to sleep this is because the noise will not allow you to have peace that is required for comfortable sleep. However there are people who won't sleep unless there is music playing in the background. Hence if you are this type of person then go ahead and play the music and sleep. The room should be clean and fresh such that the air in it is fresh too. Such a room is not only comfortable to sleep in but also pleasant. Ensure that the bed you are sleeping in is stable. A shaky bed is not comfortable and one will not be able to sleep well because of its squeaking sounds. The mattress that you are sleeping on should be cosy. Your sheets and blankets should be fresh and clean. |

That address should be put where it can be seenposted on 16 April 2012 in ComputersBefore goods are exported from the United Kingdom and taken to other countries, they are given an address in case something goes wrong, they will be sent back to where they came from. This has helped so many people send back goods that they find faulty or they don't measure up to the standards they expected them to. Those goods from belkin have their own address and so are those from other places. A belkin router ip address is given to any router that comes from belkin. In case you buy a router here and it doesn't have an internet provider addresses just know that this machine is not genuine and should be returned to the buyer as fast as possible or should not be bought. Get the same machine from someone who can sell genuine stuff to you with the correct addresses. In the world that we are living now, a lot of things are done in incorrect ways and if someone is not careful, they might get into problems with the authorities and spend so much more. |

Quirky Kitchen Flooring Ideas for My Homeposted on 16 April 2012 in Home and GardenI have always loved vibrant colors. My friends would always describe me as quirky because of my unique fashion and attitude. They say that whenever they visit my room, they would see me all over it. I guess I was really very obvious when it comes to certain things. Now that I have my new house, I can’t wait to design its interior especially the kitchen. I love cooking that is why it has always been my dream to have a kitchen that has red and orange plates with matching spoons. I had so many kitchen flooring ideas like having my tiles printed with apples or have bright yellow tiles on the wall. I have seen so many cool quirky kitchen flooring ideas that I cannot pick one idea only. That is why I have decided to put together small ideas which I got from magazines, lifestyle shows and bits of me. More on this Topic: itv.com | lifehacker.com |

Oh How I'd Like to Change My Homeposted on 14 April 2012 in Home and GardenI've lived in my current condo for over 10 years and while overall I'm happy living here, and have enjoyed making changes to my house - e.g. one of those lovely wooden folding dining tables for my dining room - there are a number of further changes I would like to make to my home. One of the big things I'd like to change are my bathrooms. The bathtubs are old and made of fiberglass so they are looking a bit worse for wear. I'd like to install brand new fiberglass tubs. While I'm at it, I'd like to replace the sinks and fixtures in the bathrooms with brand new, modern sleek ones. Another area of my home I'd like to change is the living room. Years ago I painted it brown, and I'm tired with the color. I'd like to go back to white to lighten up the place and make it look more neutral. And then there's my patio. My patio is not very exciting at the moment. I'd like to plant a bunch of ferns out there and to get all new patio furniture. I'd get a nice, big table for people to eat at and some comfortable chairs. I'd like to barbecue as well, so I'd get a nice, compact one that won't take up too much space. And those changes would make me fairly happy. Just those few things I think would liven up my home again. |
